Shift kept adding features, and each one had to be explained to people already in the middle of using the browser. This was ongoing work: whenever a new feature needed it, I made a new animation.
In-product animations for Shift
Role Designer, animator
Format Short loops as GIF and MP4, in light and dark versions
Duration 00:06 to 00:15 each
Placement In the Shift browser, marketing emails and social
Constraint A simplified Shift UI, easy to digest in small, fast-moving contexts
Problem
Approach
Each animation shows one feature in a simplified version of the Shift UI, pared back so it reads quickly at small sizes. They ran inside the product, as tutorials and when new features were announced, and were also sent out in marketing emails and used on Shift's social channels.
I handed the finished animations to the developers, who implemented them in the product.
Outcome
The animations did their job of teaching users the features, and they became the standard way Shift introduced something new.
